Advanced Wood Dust Extraction System Installed at Ballymena NRC, Northern Ireland
Nederman delivered a full suite of turnkey extraction systems for Northern Regional College (NRC) in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, one of the region's main further education providers. The project covered three distinct areas: an ATEX-compliant wood dust extraction system serving eleven woodworking machines via an external Nederman LBR-B filter unit; four separate welding fume extraction systems across the main welding workshops, oxy/acetylene booths, and a robotic welding station, using telescopic extraction arms, motorised dampers, and inverter-driven fans; and two vehicle exhaust extraction systems for automotive training bays using spring-recoiled hose reels with automatic microswitch activation.
All systems were commissioned, tested, and certified to current health and safety standards, with airflow performance ranging from 560 m³/hr per vehicle bay system up to 7,040 m³/hr per main welding workshop system.
The project delivered full regulatory compliance with COSHH, HSG 258, and ATEX standards, alongside operator training, maintenance documentation, and ongoing service support including regular LEV testing and preventative maintenance.
Beyond compliance, the college gained cleaner and safer workshops across woodworking, welding, and automotive training areas, reduced energy consumption through intelligent inverter-driven and demand-based fan control (including a recirculating system returning warm filtered air in the wood workshop), and infrastructure designed for future capacity expansion.
